Bronx, NY - Well Red Sox fans, it was nice enjoying the Yankees not win the World Series the past 9 years, but the fun is over. It happened. The Bronx Bombers cruised to their 27th World Championship Wednesday night 7-3 over the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies behind Hideki Matsui’s MVP performance.
It didn’t matter that former Red Sox hurler Pedro Martinez started for Philadelphia as he gave up 4 runs in his 4 innings of work. Five more Phillies pitchers could not stop the bleeding and before you knew it, the score was 7-1 in the 5th inning.
Yes, it was nice watching the Sox win 2 World Championships since 2004, giving them a total of 7, but they’re still 20 world championships behind New York.
So how did they do it? Money, of course. Well, the pressure was on after spending $1.5 Billion for “new” Yankee Stadium and $208 Million on payroll. By the way, the Sox rank 4th in payroll, ringing in at $122 Million. But it still took wise spending on the part of New York to put together this champion, so credit lies with the Steinbrenner’s boys, Hal and Hank. And although George Steinbrenner was not in attendance Wednesday night, you can bet he was excited about 2 things: (1) The Yankees won the World Series, and (2) the Red Sox didn’t.
So what will it take for the Sox to de-throne the Yanks? Smarter spending. Although New York’s 2009 payroll sat at $208 Million, money was spent wisely on free agents C. C. Sabathia (P), Mark Teixeira (1B), and Nick Swisher (RF). What did they do? Sabathia went 19-8 with a 3.37 ERA and 197 strikeouts on the year-one of the best of his career. Teixeira hit .292 with 39 home runs and 122 RBI, but it was his fielding percentage of .997 that shored up New York at first base. Nick Swisher enjoyed the best slugging percentage of his career (.498) with 29 homers.
Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein got the offseason started quickly Thursday trading 3 Boston prospects to the Florida Marlins for Jeremy Hermida. The 6′-3″, 210 lb right fielder gives the Sox more versatility in the outfield, but more importantly, gives them more bargaining power. Boston could choose to keep Hermida if Jason Bay signs elsewhere in his free agent season, or they could trade Hermida for other areas of need. The revolving door at shortstop may continue this year as the Red Sox have until Monday to pick up the $6 Million option on Alex Gonzalez (SS) or buyout his contract at $500,000. If Bay stays in Boston look for Epstein to trade Hermida for a shortstop. Boston also has until Tuesday to notify Jason Veritek (C) if they will be picking up his $5 Million option. Don’t look for that to happen after the club chooses to pick up Victor Martinez’s (C) $7 Million option. Boston’s catcher of the future enjoyed a solid season behind the plate hitting .303 while driving in 108 runs.
